Trip to Belgium

April 27th, 2008 Posted in After Arrival, News | No Comments »

Tomorrow I will leave Denmark for a week. I will go to Belgium for a small week. When I think of it, it won’t be an ordinary visit home. I won’t be at home as much as I am used to in this week. I will still speak english most of the time, and I will be a tourist in my own country. This all has a very logical reason. I will take my girlfriend Gintare with me. About a month ago I recieved an email that 1st of may there won’t be a project meeting (logical). So I had the idea that this week I won’t have to be here. Once I was talking with Gintare and I said: why don’t we visit Belgium? It is now or never… Later the exams will start and busy times will come.

The plan is obviously not to stay home for a week but to visit the cities in Belgium, like Ghent (the city of my univercity), Antwerp, Brussels, Bruges. 1st of May there will be a big Trance party in Antwerp: A State of Trance 350. A FREE party with a massive line-up: Armin van Buuren, Markus Schulz, John O’ Callaghan, Aly & Fila, Nic Chagall, M.I.K.E., DJ Shah. I am very glad that I will be able to attend this party!

We will return at sunday 4th of May to jump back into our project work and exam. It gives me already a strange feeling when I think of being home again. It’s like I leave home, to go home…

The First BBQ

April 25th, 2008 Posted in After Arrival, News | 1 Comment »

Last monday during Danish lessons, somebody came up with the idea to have a barbeque. The weather in Denmark had been sunny since friday, so we were all happy with this idea. First we said on tuesday, but that wasnt such a good idea, because it was to early. So we decided to do it on wednesday at 17:00. This day was a really nice and sunny day, so I was glad cos the weather was perfect. Well, in Danish norms, perfect. After getting coals in lidl and meat in kvickly (there were no BBQ packages of meat yet, so we had to select meat which would fit for it.) Around 17:30 we started with pouring the coals in the rusty BBQ. After 20 minutes we still didnt succeed to get the bbq burining nicely, so me and Ektor drove back to Kvickly to get some BBQ spiritus. once we got back at, the fire really got started. After eating alot of meat and salads (*drools*) we grilled some apples and bananas, which were really nice. You could feel, when the sun went down, that it was not even May yet, because it was getting cold very fast. But in the end we had a great BBQ, the first one, but certainly not the last one. Trip Through Denmark

April 25th, 2008 Posted in After Arrival, News | 2 Comments »

Last weekend (Friday and Saturday) I went on a trip “through Denmark”. Actually we visited nothern Jylland, but we attendet alot of towns and cities. It all started friday morning at 7:00 in the morning, getting up, to meet Katharina in Agroskolen, together with Jago and Gintare. On the way we picked up Vera and drove to the car rental service. Almost all students were joining in the trip, so we needed alot of cars. 27 people in total. so we needed 6 cars. I drove with my car, Volker drove with his, Our buddy Esben was also driving his car, and Anne was driving too. so we needed to rent 2 more cars, which would be driven by Katharina and Vera. When we finally got the cars in the rental company, we drove back to Birk at 8:40. there the crowd was waiting already. We loaded the cars and started our trip. The sun was shining, there weren’t any clouds, it was looking very nice. So the first town we drove through was a small town on the way to Viborg, just for sightseeing. We arrived Viborg around 10. It is a nice city, with an old city center. Esbens parents live in this town, so Esben and denise went to visit his parents for breakfast, together with Jago and Dana. The rest of the group went to walk around Viborg. It was dead in this city, the only people you saw were people jogging around. We gathered together again at the cathedral, where a ceremony of Kommune children just finished. Though we weren’t supposed to go into the cathedral, we did have a quick jump inside, whereafter some guy nicely asked us to leave. We had seen the cathedral by then, so it was no problem at all. Then we drove to Skive. We visited the port, and had a nice walk in the forest. The next stop was not so far away from Skive. We visited a Castle called Spøttrup Mittelalterburg. This castle reflected the population of Denmark quite nicely. In other words, the castle was very small. But visiting it was for free (again) and I was suprised by that. The castle was mostly interesting from the outside, inside there was not so much to see. Most rooms were empty or nearly empty. But it was nice to attend it. Now that I looked for the website about this castle it turns out the enterance for students was 25kr, but apparently we just went in without paying. Nice! :D

Next we went to Nykøbing Mors. When we arrived in Nykøbing Mors we lost Vera for the second time (first time was only short, just before entering Viborg). It was around 14 and we went to look for some food. A Pizza/Kebab restaurant was nearby, so we decided to go there. The owners were turkish and Esen helped us with the orders of pizza :P After dinner we gathered together at the port again, where Vera finally found us back. Then we plowed on through the danish empty roads. The sun was shining like never seen before in Denmark, everybody was happy.

Next stop was in Hanstholm. Where we lost Vera again… She stopped somewhere to take a picture, but she didnt have a navigation system, only a paper map which clearly wasnt enough to get her in the places she wanted :P. In Hanstholm we visite the beach. The beach was very deserted and full of garbage. You could see nobody came there. We ran through the weeds onto the beach and there was a very strong wind (as always in denmark at the sea). Half an hour later most of the group were in the bunkers across the street. Gintare didn’t feel well so we stayed near the car. Vera, by that time, called me to ask me where we were, but explaining how you got to the beach from an unknown place is quite impossible, so she didn’t find the beach. She was waiting at the Q8 station between Hanstholm and Aalborg, where I later found her back on our way to Aalborg. We arrived at Aalborg around 19:30 where we got the key for our Hostel. The hostel was 202 krones for the night including breakfast, which, for Denmark, is still ok :) :P It was a funny hostel, when we arrived we saw these very small “cottages”. Apparently one of these was our home for the night. This tiny house of 2.5m to 5m was good for 7 beds. On top we (Me and Gintare) created a King Size bed. After dropping our stuff in our tiny houses we watched the sunset at the river/sea. Our chalets were next to a small port in Aalborg. After the sunset we went back to Aalborg City to have some party. After some wine and McDonalds we went to the party street. There we were again amazed by how it works in Denmark. At every pub there were guys standing who were handing out little cards, worth one free beer inside. So after 3 bars and several free beers, Me and Gintare stayed in this one bar. All the rest kept running around for free beer and party :P In the end we were back home around 2 I guess, and everyone was reasonably drunk.

Day 2 started at 8:30. At 9 we went for breakfast, because at 9:30 breakfast buffet was closing. After eating and packing we drove off to Aalborg City to see this by day. I must say there were quite alot of people there when we arrived around 11. It looked like a real city that had inhabitants. We walked through the shopping street and visited a church there. At 13 we gathered back and drove to Skagen. We gathered first in the port of Skagen to wait for Esben and Anne who were comming a bit later. Once they arrived we jumped in the cars and drove to Skagen beach. Skagen is the top end of Denmark where the 2 seas come together. The second day was the same weather as the first one, sunshine all over the place but there was a strong and cold wind keeping everyone from running around in T-shirts. We were all winter clothed though, but it was nice to be there. The beach is more than 1km far at the top. And in this sea were seals swimming. Didn’t expect that! After our group photo, where we loaded a girl with a few thousand cameras, we headed back to the cars. In Skagen is also a “burried church“. All that is left of this church is the tower. The rest of this church is under the seasand and probably also largely destroyed. As a last thing we visited Skagen “City” aka “Downtown” to find something to eat. With 27 people counting group we just filled a whole snackbar/restaurant/tavern where we had a very nice dinner, and Ektor a Large Cola. Everyone decided to go back at 19 but I was not in a hurry to get back home. On my walk to the car I noticed what a artificial shopping street Skagen had. It didn’t look right, it was a wide street, very new and nicely designed. Cars could drive through it, even two lanes. In this street there were no old buildings at all. I see a shopping street as a closed by high buildings small street filled with people, the buildings are old, the street not accessible for cars and here and there some garbage. This street looked as the exact opposite :) . When we left around 20 I saw that my fuel tank was nearly empty. We had done over 450km already, so my 35L tank was not going to make it till home. After 100km more I fuelled 12L because the gas was expensive (10.5kr/l) I guessed it would be enough for another 200km, but after 100km at 160km/h it was nearly empty again. So i had to fuel a second time (pitstop) and then we drove to our final destination, herning. At 22 we arived in the city we have become used to. After dropping off Petros we went to fuel the car. Thank god it was cheaper now! “only” 9.90kr/L. After dropping of Ektor I had to drop of Esen and Gintare as the last 2 passengers. around 23 I got home then, and i must say I was pretty exhausted but happy. My passengers had been sleeping in the car all the time, but I couldn’t. Not that I felt like sleeping back then, but when you arrive at home in the end, you do feel quite tired. I could go to bed tired and happy. A great weekend had been occured.

Starting the code

April 10th, 2008 Posted in project | 2 Comments »

After 2 months (exactly) I can finally start to write PHP code. I must say the 2 months have passed by very fast. In fact I feel I could stay here for a whole year. Besides the trance parties there is nothing that I really miss (yet?). But i am happy, even almost delighted, that I can finally start with the real work. All I did up till now, was writing in word documents about techniques as XHTML, css, php, some interviews with teachers, the weekly project meetings, designing a database, problem statement, …

In the end, I think it is not so much of work for 2 months. But yeah… I am on Erasmus, so I guess it’s ok… My project tutors seem to be happy with the way/speed we work so, no real worries there.

Another good thing is that since yesterday I have uploaded alot of pictures. I am collecting all the pictures of the erasmus students and putting them online, so everybody can see the pictures of everybody. You can see all pictures at http://pics.stefanvds.com/

Birthday parties

April 4th, 2008 Posted in After Arrival, News | 1 Comment »

Last tuesday, 1st of April it was Krzysztof’s birthday, so ofcourse there was a party! And it was a true polish party with, ofcourse, Vodka. It was a nice party, but most of the people left quite early because of the upcomming party next day, Jagos Birthday party. The preparations started by juggling with beer bottles. My parents brought me 1 crate of Jupiler and alot of special beers from belgium, and another crate with a variaty of belgian special beers. Westmalle, Kriek Boon, Vicaris, Palm en Corsendonck. Together with that they brought me some beer and cocktail glasses and a big 1.5L bottle of Fiero. In short, the perfect ingredients for a good party. I also bought a crate of Kylle Kylle (30 bottles), the tuborg easter beer. Beers have to be cold, so I ran around Birk to fill our neighbours fridges with our beers. All our alcohol was cooled in 5 fridges, so no warm drinks for us :P Jago wanted to make mojitos. A few days before we did 3.5hours of driving and walking around town to find mint leaves, but in the end it was successful.

At 21 the party started and after picking up Gintare, at 21:30 there were already quite some people. I must say the party was good, the people loved the cocktails and the Belgian beers and the stronger drinks. We never guessed all beers and cocktail ingredients would be finished by the end of the party. We thought we had enough to easily make a second party, but apparently around 20 people was enough to drink it all. We did have enough beers and drinks. I think if we had more, some people might have died that night :P. Around 3:00 the party was running to its ending, which was quite a long time actually, from 21 till 3. The last people left at 4. I left the ending party at 3 and went to AgroSkolen with Gintare then. So the rest is only of “having heard”. At 4 Jago mopped the floor, because when I left, the kitchen floor (aka most busy place and also the fridge full of beer place) was black of dirt. Jago and his friends wanted to go to Copenhagen the next day, but maarten (jagos friend) had to much of everything and only came back to life around 23:00 the next day. When I woke up in Agro, I didn’t hear anything about Jago, so I was quite sure already this plan wouldn’t work out for today.

Århus by Snow

March 24th, 2008 Posted in After Arrival, News | 1 Comment »

Last friday we went to Århus for a lil’ party night. Because there was not much to do here, and we were with only 4, we could go with my car to Århus. The trip to Århus is about 1h20 driving. The weather was bad, raining all the time, cold, and very windy.  First we went to a bar to have some food and defrost ourselves. This very strange decorated bar (it looked like they collected all stuff they could find on a flee market) we had a good pizza. Later we went to the first “Club”, in the Århus Party Street, called Essen. Our buddy had given this club as an advice. So we checked it out, but it was a cocktail bar actually. And yeah!! real dj’s playing! but no one was dancing, it wasn’t dance music, it was very nice to listen to though.

After an hour or so we went to check out the second club our buddy recommended. The so called Social Club. A danish tradition is free enterance between 23 and 24. We were there at 23:50, so perfect. Also we got a free beer on top of the free enterance, And I must say the music wasn’t bad. It was a typical danish club. Alot of seats and tables, and the dancefloor could contain about 30 people. Imagine…. (or look). After some drinks and some dancing, the DJ was out of record I think, around 3AM he started playing about the same tracklist as at midnight. So that was kind of awkward. We left this club around 4:30 and then we decided to go home. When we came outside there was about 10cm of snow on the road and the cars. Some snowballs later we arrived at the car who looked like a snowmobile. Driving 80km back to Herning was an intensive job because the snow was still on the road. My very small and slim summer tyres did the sliding very well. The grip was a bit less. While we were driving home it was still very windy and snowing all the time, I nearly missed an ice cube in the middle of the road of about 50cm high, skid through one red traffic light, had alot of wheelspin (at every traffic light actually). Around 5:50 we arrived back in herning, so we went to sleep around 6:30. In the end we had a very nice party. Better than crazy daisy for sure.

Crazy Daisy

March 16th, 2008 Posted in Before Departure, News | 2 Comments »

Yesterday (Friday night) we were up to some party. The day really started when I drove to Kvickly with ektor, to get some drinks. Ektor was throwing a party at his place, whereafter we would head downtown and have some party there.

Around 21:30 we went to Ektors place, have some beer and drinks there. It was a small party though, only 5 people, because the most have left Denmark for the easter holidays. Just before 23:00 Gintare decided to join us, but the problem was that she didnt want to walk from AgroSkolen to birk. So after picking her up by car, we headed from birk to the train station, only a 5 minute walk. Aparently the train to Herning center was 3 minutes early, and didn’t felt like waiting, so in other words, we missed it.

The only way to get to the center now was by car, so we pushed 6 people in my car and drove downtown. We started our night there at Van Kok, a bar with a crappy guy behind some CD player who thinks he is a DJ, but he doesnt even try to mix tracks. The dancefloor confirmed this, because it was just empty. After half an hour, Ektor and his chinese girlfriend started dancing. Alone, Completely drunk, … After 10 minutes one security guy told Ektor and the girl they didnt like it… Apparently they weren’t dancing to danish traditions :P. One beer later we went outside to have some fun somewhere else. The chinese girl was very sick and Ektor had to take her home. The 4 of us left (Me, Jago, Esen and Gintare) went to crazy daisy where we would meet up again with Ektor. After paying 45krones of enterance fee, we got in. The free “vestiaire” (where you put your jacket) was one of the most amazing things we’ve seen there. (just to give you an idea how amazing the rest was). The inside looked quite funny, it had a hooker zebra pattern on the walls, and it was like a small club. It also looked a bit like a stip club, with only 2 poles. The DJ was just crap (again, i know, always the same). Time to get some drinks. I was waiting for someone behind the bar to notice me. Finally it worked, a fishnet stockings wearing girl who wasnt dressed very much at all, noticed me. “1 Beer and 1 Cola please”. Oh great, she only knew how to make 1 cocktail… After what felt like an hour later, I finally was able to order what I wanted. yay! With a price of 60krones, it was cheap. We were sitting somewhere, waiting for some better music. Finally some danceable music popped up. Not close to what listen to normally, but it was danceable (with some alcohol usage before). Around 4:00 we had enough. We got some dancing, we were happy. I was happy, this night wasnt so bad. We first went to AgroSkolen again to drop off Gintare and Esen. They invited us for a late dinner or an early breakfast. Around 5:30 we returned to Birk, our home. Because gintare forgot her bag in ektors flat I had to drive her back to agro again, and i was in my bed around 6. quite nice to see the morning here, i’d never had seen it before. I had a great evening/night. It was fun. Though the music on the Crazy Daisy website sounds alot better than the one we got yesterday. ;)

The Desert

March 14th, 2008 Posted in After Arrival, News | No Comments »

In Denmark the Easter Holiday is comming up. Here we get 1 week off, from 17-3-08 till 24-03-08. I must say our building is becoming a desert, it’s the only thing I can compare it with, at the moment. Where once was life, is now only death. Almost all exchange students are going home for the holidays. Some for 2 weeks.

I will stay here, in Birk, I guess… My parents are comming over from the 22nd till the 24th. What we are going to do for 3 days? I don’t know. Maybe it’s a good oportunity to learn to know the cities here. If I will show Herning to my parents, I’m afraid that I will only need a few hours. So I guess we’ll have a look around in Denmark (lets hope the weather is any good). A great thing is that my parents will bring me supplies. I asked them if they could bring me some beer (read: more than 1 crate) and some other drinks because they are more expensive here, or totally unknown. Also I asked them to bring some real cheese. I love cheese and the one here… it’s ok but it’s not very great. When my parents go back home, I think we will throw a little party here, a Belgian party with some real beer :P

What I will do for the rest of the week? I don’t really know. Maybe discover some more Denmark, work a bit on my project, We’ll see…

Interviews

March 11th, 2008 Posted in project | 1 Comment »

The project finally got started I think. The PreProject (this is a report on what exactly you are going to make, and how you will do this) has been approved.

The Preface:

My name is Stefan Van der Straeten. I am a student in ICT-Electronics and I am making this project in an exchange student programme.

The project is about creating an E-Learning Portal Website for the school. This website will be used inside the school network. Teachers have the possibility to create online courses. These courses can have a description, chapters, external files, video tutorials,… The teachers can edit and delete all of their own input. Students will be able to see and follow those E-Learning courses.

Problem Statement:

E-learning is described as the new online learning system. The advantage of E-learning is that the students can study the courses on their own tempo, and whenever they want. In the E-Learning portal teachers can create courses. Each course can have a description and can be divided in several chapters. A discussion board will also be implemented, so students who have questions about a certain topic or chapter can ask their questions to other students and/or teachers. The content of the E-Learning portal will be protected with a login. The goal of this E-Learning Portal is to make all actions on the portal as intuitive and easy-to-use as possible. This goal reflects itself in every page and option on the website, from forms till design. One of the other stressed points is the video tutorials option. These tutorials should be easy-to-use for the students, and easy to upload for the teachers.

I have chosen to make interviews with several student and teachers. Tomorrow I will have the first interview with a teacher. Then I can have a better idea on what they want, and how they want it. Finally I feel like I started on the project. Month 1 is already passed. Only 3 more to go…

FoodExpo

March 5th, 2008 Posted in After Arrival, News | No Comments »

After vacuuming the FoodExpo for 4 nights in a row, we decided we wanted to have a look by day. The enterance was free, and they were handing out free food, so the reason we wanted to see it by day is quite obvious. So today we went to the expo, and we started checking our

Hall C at 14:00. This is the biggest hall, and I and the AgroSkolen girls cleaned this baby for 3 days on a row. I didn’t eat before we went to it, and that was a good idea. The free food was everywhere, nearly every stand in the exhibition had stuff to eat and taste. McCain was handing out new products, who clearly needed to be tested. And like this there were alot of stands. There was even one bakery stand who was handing out whole breads. After an hour we were filled up, and we went to hall H, the Beer hall. I came by car so not alot of beer for me, but it was again, free for all! After hanging out there for another hour we decided we could use some more food, in hall C. All the other halls were less interesting, because they were equipped with with hotel gear. We arrived at hall C again around 16:15 and the exhibitors were starting to clean up. The hall was going to close at 17. Now insanity really started. Alot of stands were clearly not planning to take any food back home. Suddenly I felt like I was in Africa. The exhibitors just said: take what you want, we don’t need it anymore. This fruit and vegetable stand was very popular for about 15 minutes. Everybody was grabbing what he thought he could carry home. It was like an african food depot, but with white people, less people, and no fighting. Meanwhile another stand, next to it, was emptying its freezers and refrigerators full of meat. Ofcourse I took my part of it. Our tiny freezer was already full, but it had to take some more like several meat snacks. Also we now got a bag of hot dog sausages of 2.5kg. Guess we’ll be eating some hot dogs in the upcomming days!
